Underbody Welding
Proper welded repairs to the structural metalwork underneath your vehicle. Not patches - real welds with new metal.
What Is Underbody Welding?
Underbody welding is the repair of structural metalwork on the underside of your vehicle - floor pans, crossmembers, subframes, sill supports, and load-bearing panels. These are the parts that keep your vehicle safe and rigid.
When this metal rots or cracks, it's not something you can patch with filler. It needs to be cut out and replaced with new steel, properly welded. That's what we do at Quinn Engineering.
What We Repair
- Floor pan sections - partial and full replacement
- Crossmember repair and fabrication
- Subframe welding and reinforcement
- Structural jacking point repair
- Spring hanger and mounting point repair
- Boot floor and spare wheel well repair
- Van and commercial vehicle underbody
- Pre-NCT underbody preparation

Why Proper Welds Matter
There's a big difference between a patch job and a proper repair. A patch - where someone lays metal over the top of existing corrosion - might get through an NCT once, but the rot underneath keeps spreading. Within a year, you're back to where you started.
We cut back to clean metal, fabricate or fit new sections, and weld them in properly. The repair becomes part of the structure, not something sitting on top of it.
Irish Conditions Are Brutal on Underbodies
Road salt, coastal damp, and Irish winters take a serious toll on the underside of vehicles. If you're in the Dundalk, Omeath, or A91 area, your vehicle is exposed to all three. We see the results every week - floor pans rotted through, crossmembers sagging, jacking points collapsed.
If your vehicle is more than 8-10 years old and has spent its life on Irish roads, it's worth getting the underside checked.
Vans and Commercial Vehicles
Vans and commercial vehicles take particularly hard punishment underneath. They carry heavy loads, do high mileage, and often don't get the underbody attention they need until something fails. We handle underbody welding on transits, sprinters, and commercial vehicles across the Dundalk area.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between underbody welding and a quick patch?
A proper repair means cutting out the rotten steel and welding in new metal of the same gauge. A patch tacked over rust just hides the problem and fails again. We do not patch over structural rot.
Will underbody welding get my car through the NCT?
If the corrosion is in a structural area it has to be welded properly to pass. Filler and underseal over rot do not. A suitable weld repair can address the corrosion defect. The test centre makes the final decision, and other faults may still prevent a pass.
Do you weld vans and commercial vehicles for the CVRT?
Yes. Vans and jeeps face the annual CVRT, the test many people still call the DoE, and underbody corrosion is a common cause of failure. We sort van floors, sills and chassis before test day.
My underseal looks fine. Could there still be rot underneath?
Yes. Rust often spreads under intact underseal where you cannot see it. If the coating is lifting or flaking, or the car is over about ten years old, it is worth an inspection.
How much does underbody welding cost?
It depends on how many sections need doing. One area is at the lower end; multiple sections cost more. Send photos on WhatsApp or bring it in for a straight price.
What area do you cover?
We are in Omeath on the Cooley peninsula and cover Dundalk, Carlingford, the A91 area and across Co. Louth.

Find Out What Your Vehicle Needs
Our workshop is in Ardaghy, Omeath, about 20 minutes from Dundalk. Call before travelling to discuss the repair and availability.
1. Send the details
WhatsApp the make, model, year, your town and any NCT failure wording. Include a wide photo and close-ups of the damaged area. Only take photos where it is safe to do so.
2. Get an initial assessment
Photos help us discuss the likely work and whether a workshop inspection is needed. Hidden corrosion can change the scope.
3. Agree the repair
A vehicle inspection confirms the work and price before you decide to proceed. Let us know your test or retest date when you contact us.
